Class Rating Renewal/Revalidation
Lyneham Flying Club can cater for class rating renewals and revalidations for EASA and NPPL licences.
SEP Class Rating Revalidation
- For a rating that has NOT expiredThere are 2 ways to revalidate a class rating; by experience or through the completion of a ‘Proficiency Check.’
By Experience
In order for a pilot to revalidate his/her Class Rating by experience the following criteria must be met within the 12 months preceding Class Rating expiry:
• 12 Hours Flight Time on Class to include:
• 6 Hours Flight Time as PIC (Pilot In Command)
• 12 Take-offs and landings as PF (Pilot Flying)
• A 1 Hour Training Sortie* with a FI(A) or CRI(A) who must countersign the appropriate logbook entry
*This training flight may be replaced by any other aeroplane proficiency check or skills test for an instrument, class or type rating with a qualified Examiner, or by a flight test for the issue/revalidation or renewal of a UK IMC rating. The content and structure of the training flight is at the Pilot’s discretion.
UK QMP must undertake the Training Sortie with a UK Military Instructor.
NB: If the licence contains both SEP(Land) and TMG ratings, revalidation requirements of both classes may be satisfied by completing the above criteria in an SEP(Land) Aeroplane or TMG (or a combination of both).
By Proficiency Check
If a pilot is unable to revalidate his/her class rating by experience then a ‘Proficiency Check’ will need to be completed with a Flight Examiner within the 3 months preceding rating expiration.
Who Can Sign Class Revalidations?
Currently at Lyneham we have several local examiners authorised to sign class rating revalidations by experience (Roger Milburn, John Warman, Graham Stokes, David Jones & Robert Miller). Any examiner can also perform the revalidation “Proficiency Check” for those who have not met the prerequisites for revalidation by experience.
SEP Class Rating Renewal
- For a rating that HAS expiredA Class Rating Renewal is required if the class rating has expired (the current date is after the ‘Validity Date’ printed on the class rating page of the licence.)
Where licence holders have been unable to renew an SEP(Land) or TMG Class Rating for a period not exceeding 5 years from the date of expiration, they will be required to complete the following:
• The CAA mandates no additional training although refresher training is recommended and is completed at the Pilot’s discretion sufficient to pass the Skills Test.
• Complete a Skills Test with a Flight Examiner.
• Pass an oral theoretical knowledge examination to be conducted by the Examiner as part of the Skills Test.
Lyneham Flying Club has several people who can perform this test. (Roger Milburn, John Warman, Graham Stokes, David Jones & Robert Miller).
NPPL SEP Class Rating Revalidation
- For a rating that has NOT expiredThere are 2 ways to revalidate an NPPL class rating; by experience or through the completion of a ‘Skills Test.’
By Experience
In order for a pilot to revalidate his/her Class Rating by experience the following criteria must be met within the 24 months Validity of the Class Rating:
• 12 Hours Flight Time on Class including 8 hours PIC
• 12 Take-offs and landings as PF (Pilot Flying)
• A 1 Hour Training Sortie* with a FI(A) or CRI(A) – If this is not completed the rating will be endorsed with ‘Single Seat Only’.
By Skills Test
If a pilot is unable to revalidate his/her class rating by experience then a ‘Skills Test’ will need to be completed with a Flight Examiner prior to rating expiry.
NPPL SEP Class Rating Renewal
- For a rating that HAS expiredA Class Rating Renewal is required if the class rating has expired (the current date is after the ‘Validity Date’ printed on the class rating page of the licence.)
Where licence holders have been unable to renew an SEP rating by experience, a Skills Test with a Flight Examiner must be completed. If the rating has lapsed by a period under 5 years then no additional training is required before attempting the Skills Test. If, however, the rating has lapsed by more than 5 years the licence holder is mandated to complete some refresher training before attempting the Skills Test.
